I read these books a couple of months ago, so I’m not sure how good my reviews will be but I’ll do my best. Also, this segment was originally titled Book Reviews, but I’ve decided to be basic and call them Recent Reads instead. I feel like it’s a much more fitting title. So without further ado lets jump into some of the books I’ve read in the past few months.
According to Goodreads Circe was the book I read first after the reading rush. I had tried to read this book a couple of times before, both times having borrowed it from my local library, however, I never seemed to make it very far before it had to be returned. I had kind of decided that maybe this book and I were not meant to be when I found a copy for a few dollars at a market stall. I decided to give this book another chance, and even though it is a fairly slow read I did find myself enjoying it and really connecting to the character of Circe throughout the story.
This was a very average short story collection for me at the time I read it, which was at the end of August. And looking back on it it’s an utterly forgettable one. I only remember the first two stories; Singing my Sister Down, which I enjoyed and the second one which I don’t remember the name of., that was okay Those two also happen to be the two that I had read previously. So I don’t really have much more to say besides I can’t really remember any of the stories.
This year has really been the year for graphic novels for me, I have been going through periods where I just binge a whole bunch. The last few months was one of those times. I was intitally attracted by the cover of Skywards because it was facing out on the library shelf and it caught my attention. So I decided to pick it up, honestly, this is how I pick most of my graphic novel selections. I really enjoyed the first two volumes, the first slightly more than the second but they were both good. The series has a really interesting concept, basically, gravity has disappeared. I look forward to the the third and I think final volume.
Rat Queens Vol. 1 was a fun read and I enjoyed it. It feels very much like DnD, well at least from my knowledge and experience, which I think is the point. However I didn’t feel like I needed to read the next volume straight away and I’m not really that interested in subsequent volumes. However this doesn’t mean I won’t pick up others in the future.
Lumberjanes is the graphic novel series that I’ve been read the most of. I did not necessarily read volumes 7-10 in one go but I did read them all in the past few months and they tend to blend together. I always enjoy this series it’s a fun read, though I wish the art style would stay a little more consistent, it’s always jarring to open the next volume or even sometimes the next chapter and for it to look completely different from the last one you read. I love the cast of characters they are always really fun to have adventures with, however I do sometimes wish the series didn’t feel so surface level. Particularly in the last few volumes I’ve read there doesn’t seem to be really any strong plot thread or even point.
I picked this one up because I noticed that it was by the same guy who did Seconds. Honestly, I think that I liked this one better, it had an excellent sense of humour, interesting characters and the art was gorgeous. I was sad that my library didn’t have the second volume; I may have to request it in.
I just realised that with the exception of a couple of Lumberjanes volumes I read all the above books in August 2019.
